Great summary of the history of this unique urban space. I hike there a lot as my "quick"'hike when I don't have time (or want to deal with traffic) to go to the foothills. The slow infill of suburbs into the surrounding area is a bit unsettling to watch but hopefully the wildlife won't be impacted.
I’ve yet to take advantage of the trails there. I usually hike with my dog and they don’t allow them as far as I know.
I have mixed feelings about the development around the refuge. A lot of the housing is on the cheaper end for around Denver without being crazy far from the city, but I share your hope that it won’t ruin the refuge.
